Dove St. Laundromat
EXIF: SONY DSLR-A700 | 1/25 sec | f 4.5 | 35.0mm (35mm equivalent: 52.0mm) | ISO 400

Well, things did not work out as I had planned on my short overnight exploration of future possibilities. I'll leave that a mystery for you to ponder.

I was quite surprised and pleased to learn this morning that this photograph, taken last Saturday during the Scott Kelby Photowalk in Albany was selected as the local winner. Given the quality of photos from the other participants I was really shocked that this photo was selected. From the announcement that went around this morning:

'I’m pleased to announce that Bob Foss and his image entitled “Laundromat” has been selected as the best image of the 2008 Albany SK Photo Walk.

Bobs image was held in the top three of my final selections, all the selection being of great subject matter, composition and tonality. Each image was so well shot that I couldn’t honestly tell if they had been Photoshoped or altered (even though I knew for a fact they had). They were so well prepared they could have been straight from the camera to my screen. I wanted to see images that could have been taken by anyone using any camera; I didn’t want to judge on the persons editing skills, it wasn’t an editing competition it was a general photography competition, the fact that I couldn’t tell really improved these images.

What finally set Bobs apart from the rest was the impression I got from looking at it, more so, the story. When I view the “Laundromat” I have a sense of it being part of a larger story, I genuinely wanted to know more about it. I wanted to know where it was, who goes there, and the people who do go there, I wanted to hear their stories too, all because of this image. It evoked my curiosity; in fact it’s the only image I clicked the more properties button on. I wanted to know how such an image was created, what were the settings, what was the focal length of the lens…everything! A truly successful image.'

Sorry, but I felt like tooting my own horn a bit after my disappointment for the other matter.

Friday Morning Addendum

I should clarify...I was selected the winner of ONLY the Albany, NY PhotoWalk. The judging was done by the local organizer, Dan Cooper. Having won this contest against a pool of about 15 other photographers, my shot will now be moved up to the global competition which, I gather, will be judged by Scott Kelby. A very long shot competitor I'd imagine. I did very little post processing on this shot (it never even saw Photoshop, for example) and only did some work in Lightroom. I wanted to win the local competition because the prize is a copy of Scott's new Lightroom 2.0 book...and I recently upgraded to LR2.0!
